Ceylon sapphires are celebrated for their open, vivid saturation without dark or inky undertones. Because they are found in alluvial gravels (ilam) rather than metamorphic rock, crystals undergo less natural strain, yielding superior internal clarity and brilliance.
Prices range from $300 to $1,500/ct for commercial heated stones, $1,500 to $5,000/ct for fine heated cornflower or royal blue stones (1–3ct), and $5,000 to over $25,000/ct for unheated, top-grade investment sapphires with GIA or NGJA certification.
Authenticity should be confirmed by independent laboratory certification (NGJA, GIA, GRS, or Gubelin). Microscopic examination of natural rutile silk needles, negative crystals, and trace element analysis (spectrometry) confirms Sri Lankan provenance.
